A few years ago, I used the Simplicity 8875 Misses’ Dress Sewing Pattern to sew a dress for Easter. I thought the Simplicity sewing pattern was a cute design and different than anything I had worn in the past. This v‑neck and girly style wasn’t the dress I would naturally gravitate towards. But the style was becoming more and more popular with designers and influencers (DVF’s granddaughter created a line of dresses like this), so I decided to try this romantic dress style and add something new to my wardrobe.
The feminine dress has a deep v neckline, high and long waistline, pleated sleeves, and mid length and ruffled hemline.

I use sewing patterns (instead of making self-drafted patterns) to save myself time in the design, patternmaking, and construction process. However, I did not save any time using S8875 sewing pattern and I only wore the dress once, which was for Easter.
My body shape isn’t too hard to fit, so I was surprised when this dress fit so poorly on me. I probably spent more time seam ripping and doing alterations than I did sewing the pattern pieces together. It was a nightmare and not the quick sewing project I had hoped for when choosing this commercial pattern.

Simplicity Patterns low-price tag is tempting, but (from my experience) their garments don’t fit as nicely as other brands- even if you follow their sizing charts. (Nothing compares to their $1.99 sales!)
Here are some suggestions for other seamstresses: Kwik Sew Patterns have the best instructions. (I highly recommend this brand for beginner seamstresses.) Burdastyle Patterns are my favorite! They have the best styles, they send a magazine full of new patterns every month to subscribers, and patterns are easy to adjust because they don’t include seam allowances. Vogue Patterns fit well and have great instructions.
