The best things in life uplift us. I am not talk­ing about ele­va­tors when we need to get to the top floor, (although that is nice). Rather I am talk­ing about lift­ing our spir­its as we go about our day-to-day activ­i­ties. This is the role of the artist, who “give us enthu­si­asm to do our work” as St. John Paul II said in his famous Let­ter to Artists. Beau­ty speaks to our hearts like noth­ing else, for it promis­es some­thing that we are all seek­ing – happiness.

How­ev­er this does not always result in a promise ful­filled. We are all aware that beau­ty can be decep­tive when it is only skin-deep. Such untruths can hurt. How­ev­er if beau­ty is a draw towards some­thing that is actu­al­ly good, well that is quite anoth­er thing. And if it points to the Tran­scen­dent then it is in the ser­vice of the high­est things – of what actu­al­ly is.

So you can under­stand my joy when I received these pic­tures of my dress­es being used for such a pur­pose. I am a bit tardy in shar­ing them with you, because they deserved more than just a few hur­ried thoughts. In reflect­ing upon them, it became an occa­sion to bet­ter appre­ci­ate the impact of my work. As you know every piece is a new hand-craft­ed orig­i­nal. Even though oth­ers have knocked off my ideas for mass pro­duc­tion (whether here in the states or over­seas), it is good to be remind­ed of the high­er call­ing of the artist and the val­ue of what they can offer the world today.
