Supplies needed:
Fabric (1 yard for 8 placemats/napkins)
Cutting board
Rotary cutter
Ruler
Pins
Thread
Sewing machine
Washable marking pen
Ironing Board
Seam Gauge
Step 1:
Pre-wash and Pre-shrink your fabric. I used a 100% cotton and used “normal” settings on the washer and dryer.
Step 2:
Iron fabric. Be sure to press the fabric properly. Do not press diagonally because it will misalign the grain line.
Step 3:
Cut 8 – 12.57”x17” rectangles
Step 4:
With a washable marking pen, mark the lines ½” in from edge and 1” from edge.
Step 5: Marking the Corners:
Mark 2 new 1”x1” squares around the corner 1”x”1 square (created in step 4)
Next, mark a line that goes diagonally through the squares (green line shown in the image)
Then, mark a new (seam allowance) line ½” out towards the corner from the diagonal line. This new line should look like the pink line in the image.
Then, cut the corners off on the pink line.
Step 6: Fold in the sides 1/4” and Iron
Step 6: Making the Mitered corners
-With right sides together, fold the corners together (match the diagonal lines)
-Sew along the diagonal line (as seen in the photo)
- Cut off access fabric at the point
-Use something pointy to turnover the corners
Step 7: Fold each side another 1/2” and iron
Step 8: Use something pointed to point out the corners. (I used a French curve)
Step 9: Top stitch 7/8” along the edges. Then press the napkins.
Finished! Enjoy!
